Kent – A virtual tour through the ‘Garden of England’

In this article Lilly, our Senior Travel Expert will take us on a virtual tour of her hometown in England.

“I come from a little village called High Halstow in Rochester in the county of Kent, only about 30 miles from London. Kent is the oldest county in England, famous for the iconic White Cliffs of Dover and it’s going to be home to a 3.5 billion pound theme park by paramount Pictures which is London’s answer to Disneyland, set to open in 2024.

If you are a fan of the great novels of Charles Dickens you would have read about this area in Pickwick Papers, David Copperfield and Great Expectations as this was his beloved hometown.

For hundreds and hundreds of years, Kent has been known as ‘The Garden of England’ as the entire area is covered in green rolling hills, farmland and fruit-filled country estates. 

This beautiful area offers plenty of things to do like visiting the picturesque seaside towns of Fordwich, Chilham and Aylesford and if you are a fan of the outdoors, you will love the scenic walks through the coastline and the iconic English countryside.

The castles around the areas offer a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the history of the region – some of my favourites are the Dover Castle, Leeds Castle, Rochester Castle.

One of my favourites things to do on my weekends was going on a day trip to Canterbury and wonder the city walls.

On my day trips, I would never miss out on walking through Westgate Gardens, brush up on the local history at Canterbury Tales Museum and have lunch at my best friend’s pub ‘The Fordwich Arms’- The recently awarded 1 Michelin Star pub is one of Britain best-kept secrets, definitely worth a visit if around the area!

There are so many ways to include Kent in your UK holiday including basing yourself in London and catch a train to the larger towns or hire a car and drive through the countryside. Visiting the little charming villages (and pubs of course!) and drive along the coast through the seaside towns getting to enjoy the best Fish & chips is one of the best ways to experience England and its most authentic side.”
